Gozo Area Information

Sannat

Incredible cliffs plunge steeply into the Mediterranean along the coast of Sannat, making for a breathtaking view. Ta' Cenc is well-known for this in particular. Don't forget to stop by the bayside stall for some fresh fish at the dramatic little inlet of Mgarr ix-Xini. Where Brad Pitt filmed the famous film By The Sea.

Towards the southern coast of Gozo is the little, rustic village of Ta' Sannat, with the larger cities of Victoria to the north, Munxar to the west, and Xewkija to the east. Famous for its towering cliffs, lush scenery, and fascinating ancient sites, Sannat is a must-visit for any history buff. The Mgarr Phase temple complex known as It-Tempju tal-Imramma is the area's most significant archaeological discovery (3800-3600BC).

There is a wide variety of plant and animal life in the region known as Ta' Cenc, and the location is also home to a Dolmen, or a collection of standing stones with a horizontal one perched on top, and a set of Cart-Ruts, or two parallel paths carved into the rock. How the Dolmen and Cart-Ruts were put to use is still a mystery. Certainly one of the most breathtaking sights in all of Malta is to be found in Ta' Cenc, where the tallest cliffs in all of Gozo plunge precipitously into the Mediterranean.

The Church of Saint Margeret was built on the site of an earlier church that had been there since the Middle Ages. As early as 1688, the area around Sannat and Munxar were officially recognized as a Parish, however records suggest it had been inhabited since at least 1575. In 1718, a new, larger Church was constructed there, and by 1755, it had been dedicated. In 1860, the same Church underwent an expansion, and by 1910, it had a dome and bell towers.

Visit the Lace House in Sannat, a community famous for its ancient art form, which has even been visited by Queen Elizabeth II.

The recently renovated Palazzo Palina in Ta' Cenc is another must-see. From the Wignacourt Defense Tower, you can see both Comino and Malta, as well as the picturesque Mgarr ix-Xini inlet with its distinctive environment.
