Gozo Area Information
San Lawrenz
To the west of the island of Gozo, near the towns of Kercem and Gharb, is the picturesque rural village of San Lawrenz. The village sits on a plain between three hills, the highest of which rises to an elevation of 195 meters above sea level and gives Gozo its name. Dwejra Bay, a stunning natural attraction with its own special geological and ecological characteristics, is also located within San Lawrenz. Visits to the natural reserve of Fungus Rock, the magnificent Azure Window, and the intriguing Inland Sea are highlights of any trip to Gozo.
Ghar iz-Zerqa is a narrow opening in the cliffs accessible by boat from the Inland Sea. The tunnel is sixty meters in length (Blue Cave). The protected Fungus Rock is a 65-meter-tall megalithic rock where the Knights uncovered a medicinal fungus called Gherq is-Sinjur.
Geologists continue to be fascinated by the dramatic landscapes and seascapes that can be seen at Dwejra at sunset. Due to its unique underwater geology, including the Blue Hole, the Coral Cave, and other caves and cliff walls that are home to a wide variety of marine life, the area is a popular diving destination in the Mediterranean.
The Fungus Rock (Hagret il-General) and its valuable medicinal fungus were guarded by Dwejra Tower, which was constructed by the Knights in 1651 as a coastal defense. Visit the Saint Anne's Chapel and then hike up the cliffs to the north of the Inland Sea, where you can try your hand at helping historians decipher the cart ruts' mysterious origins, ends, and two-meter drop.
Even the town of San Lawrenz has its own unique character. As of the 2008 Census, its population was 566, making it the third-least populous municipality in the entire Maltese Archipelago. There's the one restaurant in town, a general store, and a bar run by the local soccer team. Many of the locals used to work on farms, but after World War II the economy changed and many of them joined the government or went into business for themselves.
Once thought to have been built in 1545, records of the historic San Lawrenz chapel have been found dating back to 1545. The current structure, which dates back to 1665, is the result of numerous restorations and rebuilds over the centuries. According to legend, God personally intervened in the rebuilding process by bringing a stream to the surface during a time of great need, but then the stream dried up shortly after the construction was finished.
A labor of love from the villagers, the Saint Lawrence Church was finished in 1889 and is now considered one of the most beautiful baroque churches on the island thanks to its collection of artwork, which includes four paintings by the famous artist Giuseppe Cali depicting Christ on the Cross (1892), Our Lady of Pompeii (1893), San Michael (1891), and Saint Joseph (1890). (1892).
Ta' Cangura was a part of the Gharb neighborhood before San Lawrenz was established as a parish in 1893. When it was officially recognized as a parish, it took the name of its much-beloved patron saint, Saint Lawrence, whose feast day is August 10.
