Nadur
Nadur is one of Gozo's largest localities, located on the island's easternmost plateau between the villages of Qala, Ghajnsielem, and Xaghra. Its eastern location made it known as the village of the rising sun, as is depicted in the emblem of the village, while its high location gave it its name Nadur, which means to keep guard or to dominate from a high spot. Indeed, Nadur overlooks lovely valleys and provides breathtaking views of Comino and Malta.
The presence of Ta' Sopu Tower, which lies half way between Dahlet Qorrot and San Blas, and Kenuna Tower, which served as a telegraph link between Malta and Gozo, demonstrates Nadur's role in keeping vigil against oncoming threats from the sea and all around. Visit the new Maltese Garden in Kenuna, which also has spectacular views.
Nadur has one of Gozo's most beautiful stretches of coastline, including the stunning bays of San Blas, Dahlet Qorrot, and Ramla. Ramla l-Hamra (The Red Sand) is a beautiful beach with bright orange sand and clear green water. It is a large beach with a number of kiosks and is probably Gozo's most popular sandy beach. San Blas is a smaller, more peaceful version, owing in part to its difficulty of access. Dahlet Qorrot is a charming small bay with colorful boathouses built into natural caves and ledges in the cliffs.
It's no surprise, then, that Nadur was one of the Citadel's first hamlets to be elevated to the status of village and granted independence in 1688. From their fields, the people of Nadur continue to produce a large number of apples, peaches, pears, plums, oranges, lemons, and melons for the entire Maltese islands. On June 29th, a public holiday known as L-Mnarja, the feast of Nadur is celebrated. Its name is derived from luminaria (illumination), and it is a Maltese seasonal ritual and custom.
The Nadur Carnival is unquestionably the most famous event in Nadur. Every year, thousands of people flock to the village from all over Malta and Gozo, as well as an increasing number of tourists, to partake in the unusual revelry that is Nadur Carnival. Expect strange and dark costumes, homemade floats, traditional song in small bars, music stages, and lots of unplanned street madness!
