Gozo Area Information
Xaghra
Xaghra is famous for two of Gozo's best sights: the ancient Ggantija temples and the stunning Ramla l-Hamra sandy bay. You can't go wrong with the central square, the old streets, and the surrounding countryside that are so characteristic of Gozitan life. The Museum of Toys, for example, is a delightful hidden gem.
Xaghra, also known as Shara, was one of the earliest settlements in Gozo. The streets of the village are twisting and picturesque in the manner typical of Gozitan architecture. But Xaghra isn't only about that.
The Ggantija Temples (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) are widely believed to have served as a sacred site dedicated to the worship of the Goddess. These amazing megaliths were built around 3600 BC and are officially recognized as "the earliest free standing buildings in the world" by the Guinness Book of World Records. There are many more significant prehistoric monuments nearby, including caves, the Santa Verna Temple, the Gozo Stone Circle, the tal-Qacca Hypogeum, the in-Nuffara temple, and the Gozo Hypogeum.
If you want to go back in time without going nearly that far, the Ta' Kola windmill is close by. Built in 1725, it has been refurbished and now houses a folklore museum in the original miller's quarters as a tribute to the millers of yesteryear and today.
The Pomskizillious Museum is Edwin and Susan Lowe's private collection of toys spanning the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Edward Lear, who went to Gozo in 1866, is credited with giving the island its name. The name was taken from his book of made-up creatures and meaningless phrases.
Visit Ninu's Cave and Xerri's Grotto below ground to see a spectacular display of stalactites and stalagmites. Both were discovered during attempts to dig wells, and as a result, they are now housed in homes not far from the town common.
Calypso's Cave offers a breathtaking panorama of the azure Mediterranean and Ramla bay, known for its vivid orange (red) sand. Calypso, a nymph who lived in this cave, is said to have enchanted Ulysses and kept him captive on her lovely island for seven years in the ancient Greek poetry, The Odyssey. The city of Xaghra is full with interesting sights that can convince any tourist to do the same.
